In the Pennine hills, in Teesdale in northern England, lies the small village of Cotherstone a mile from Romaldkirk and Lartington, 2 miles from Eggleston and just 52 miles from Newcastle and 40 miles from Durham. At one time within the historic county boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the area was transferred to County Durham for administrative and ceremonial purposes in 1974. The railway line crossed the River Balder at the Balder Viaduct just north of Cotherstone where there was a railway station on the now-closed Barnard Castle to Middleton-in-Teesdale line.
