Corse Lawn is situated 7 miles north of Gloucester and about the same distance south-west of Tewkesbury and is just in the county of Herefordshire. The name derives from the Old English (although it may have Celtic roots), Corse= marsh or bog; Lawn = chase or heath. The area was once well wooded with glades and clearings and was part of the great estate of the monastic church at Deerhurst, it was then passed to the new Abbey of Westminster; the Earls of Gloucester held the hunting rights. The manor appears to have been a sub-manor of Westminster Abbey in 1281 it was confirmed to Gilbert of Corse, a forester, but is not subsequently recorded again until the end of the Middle-Ages, but it may have been the home of William Butler between 1390 & 1450.
