The market town of Coleford, also called, Coverd; Cover, or Colevorde in ancient documents, grew up around a ford in in about 1286. Coleford is surrounded on three sides by low hills rising to 740 feet, towards the northwest the land falls towards the valley. It had a Chapel by the late 15th century and it emerged as the principle settlement on the west side of the Forest of Dean. The towns prosperity was enhanced by the granting of market rights in 1661 and by the growth in the Forest`s mining, iron-making and quarrying industries.
