Clavering is a village in north-west Essex, situated 20 miles south of Cambridge on the River Stort, just 10 miles from London Stansted Airport. The village's name means "place where clover grows". Notable sites in Clavering include Clavering Castle, The Clavering Village Shed, the former Clavering Guildhall and the Ford Keeper’s Cottage – the smallest house in Essex. The remains of the castle are now just ringworks and earthworks. The castle is believed to date to pre-Norman times and is situated 50m north of the church of St Mary and St Clement on the southern bank of the River Stort.
