In around 1251 the settlement of Cherlegh and the town was not officially Chorley until 1793 through an Act of Parliament. As far back as 1498 Chorley was a market town, a tradition that continues today, there are two main areas – The Flat Iron (known locally as “The Cattle Marketâ€) and Chorley Covered Market which makes up the centre of the town with static lock up stalls.. Located in the County of Lancashire in the North West of England there is evidence that the Romans also visited the area, a hoard of Roman coins found were off Southport Road in around 1820.
