Chard is a very old town and parish in the county of Somerset. It is situated 15 miles south west of Yeovil, on the A30 close to the Devon border. It is the southernmost and, at 397 feet above sea level, the highest town in Somerset. Chard was the original seat of Cerdic, the first King of Wessex. Some scholars consider the legend of King Arthur to have been based on Cerdic and some believe Camelot was located somewhere near Chard. The Church of St Mary the Virgin was rebuilt in the 15th century but originally dates from the 11th century.
