On it`s journey westwards from the Cotswolds to the River Seven, the River Frome and it`s tributaries have cut a series of deep, narrow, wooded valleys, more Alpine in appearance than the rolling hills to the east. The village of Chalford lies mostly on the northern side of a valley known from the seventeenth century as the "Golden Valley", so named because of the glorious autumnal colours and hues of the wooded slopes (or because of the vast fortunes made by the mill owners!!). Chalford is an amalgam of five smaller villages - Chalford; Chalford Hill (Lynch); France Lynch;Bussage and Brownshill - these villages grew to house the weavers and other cloth workers, including Huguenot refugees, as a result of the expansion of the woollen and silk making industries.
