The Castlefield area of Manchester evolved from a Roman settlement of AD79. It was after the Romans left that the area became something of a wasteland, and became overgrown. Such was the state of the area that by the Middle Ages it was known locally as “The castle in the Field†- a reference to the earlier Roman fort that was located here. From the mid-eighteenth century it became an area of thriving industry and it boasts Britain's first man made canal — The Bridgewater Canal — and the first passenger railway station, which now houses the Museum of Science and Industry.
