Castel is the largest parish in Guernsey in terms of area. It is named Castel because its parish church, St Marie de Castel, was built on what had formerly been a Roman Fort. It is believed the Romans chose this location as it is central to the island. The 14th century church has two main notable features, a preserved medieval fresco and a menhir in the churchyard. The pre Christian Neolithic standing stone appears to be carved into the shape of a woman and is believed to be a female fertility symbol.
