Burnley is to be found in the North West of England in an area known as East Lancashire and was at one time producing a greater length of cotton cloth that any other in the world. It all started around 1296 when a fulling mill was built on the banks of the River Brun. Fulfilling is a process of cleansing, shrinking and thickening the cloth by moisture, heat and pressure, this process effectively cleans and thickens the cloth. The 18th century was of great importance to Burnley, firstly was the introduction of worsted manufacture and by the end of the century Burnley was an important centre for worsted cloth.
