Burnham, considered still to be a village by many of its residents, has a population of 12,500. In South Buckinghamshire it lies north of the River Thames, sitting on the border with Berkshire, between the towns of Maidenhead and Slough. The town is best regarded as being part of Slough due to urban development encroaching, although it has retained some of its unique character. Burnham was once an important town. The road from London to Bath passed through and, as a result, in 1271, the town received a Royal charter to hold a market and an annual fair.
