The town of Bridgnorth is to be found nestling on the banks of the River Severn – well at least part of it is as Bridgnorth is almost two towns in one. There is the Low Town of Bridgnorth along which the River Severn flows and this was once a busy port, the Vikings being amongst the first people to appreciate its unique location around 890AD, at one time Bridgnorth was the largest inland port in Europe. It was the coming of the railways that saw the importance of Bridgnorth fade as a port of substance.
