Blackfriars is named after a 13th Century Dominican priory which was sited near the north bank of the Thames. Located in the south-west corner of the City of London, this is a particularly inspiring district since it introduces the visitor to both historic sights and contemporary attractions. Blackfriars is overlooked by the unmistakeable dome of St Paul's Cathedral. The wedge-shaped Black Friar pub, built in 1875, remains a monument to the area's history, with a statue of a jolly friar standing above the doorway and the jaw-dropping interior decor (of marble, mosaics and brass) depicting scenes from priory life.
