Birtley is situated to the south of Gateshead, in the county of Tyne & Wear in north-east England. Physically linked to Chester-le-Street across the County boundary in County Durham and forming part of the old Chester-le-Street Rural District until 1974 when the county of Tyne & Wear was created. Originally part of the Barony of Prudhoe, it was the property of the Duke of Northumberland in 1765 when it was separated from the parish of Chollerton and received independent jurisdiction, included within the historic county boundaries of County Durham.
