Bettyhill is a rural village on the west-coast in the Highlands of Scotland situated at the head of the Strathnaver Valley, in the remote Sutherland County, with the villages of Tongue to the west and Melvich to the east. The area has been inhabited by ancient settlements, in the graveyard stands a Pictish cross dating from c800 and there are archaeological sites with finds of Pictish stones and a Bronze-Age beaker; now housed in the Strathnaver Museum. Bettyhill was originally a fishing and crofting village and from the 11th century the traditional homeland of the dominant historical clan Mackay, the area is still referred to as ‘Mackay Country’.
