The North Wales town of Bethesda sits astride the A5 that links Bangor and Betws-y-Coed, much of it built on steeply sloping streets that presage the Carneddau Mountains forming a scenic backdrop to the east. Named for one of the revivalist chapels that still dot the townscape, Bethesda was built on and (in part) of slate, though nature provided stone for building here too. The local slate was considered of particularly high quality, its blue-green sheen so prized that it was exported worldwide via Bangor.
