The town of Belford lies forty nine miles north of Newcastle, in Northumberland, in a vale whereby it is sheltered from the easterly winds by a line of hills which in turn, give way to the coastal plain. The area is mainly agricultural supporting both crops and animals. Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII, stayed at Belford on her jouney north to marry James IV of Scotland in 1502. Subsequent history of Belford is that of a post town, situated on the London to Edinburgh post road. Belford Hall, to the east of the town, was built in the 1750’s by Abraham Dixon and remains a good example of an eighteenth century mansion set in parkland.
