Just a few miles east of busy Maidstone, the ancient village of Bearsted is like a different world, a place where cricketers still play on the green surrounded by charming houses, cottages, oasts and inns. Some of these have special historic interest including The Limes, originally a medieval hall house, and Snowfield House, once home to Baroness Emmuska Orczy, author of "The Scarlet Pimpernel". A windmill once stood high behind Snowfield. Bearsted has a long cricketing history: its village sign features a painting of the late Alfred Mynn, "The Lion of Kent" who pioneered over-arm bowling, at the wicket in his best whites.
