Barmouth is home to the annual Three Peaks Race and is in fact where it was first suggested by a couple of local GP’s in 1977. One of them pointed out that the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales (Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon) are close to the sea and it would be fun to visit each by boat and then climb them. Barmouth is first recorded as a small port on the Welsh coast in 1565 and during the 18th and 19th centuries Barmouth and the Afon Mawddach developed as one of the major shipbuilding centres in Wales.
