About 4 miles North-West of Chesterfield lies the North Derbyshire village of Barlow. A tree planted at the Coronation of George V in 1911 marks the centre of the old village, known in Anglo-Saxon times as Barley. The village pump from 1840 stands opposite, with 1 of the 3 wells dressed every August during the Barlow Feast, following the traditional festival of St. Lawrence. The church of St. Lawrence was erected in 1142 by the Barley family with Barlow Hall built soon after. restoration of the church in early Norman style took place in 1867 and inside is an alabaster tomb to Robert Barley and his wife dated 1467.
