Bamburgh is the ancient capital of Northumbria, located on the North Sea coast, most famous for its extensive, award-winning sandy beaches and magnificent castle that dominates the coastline. A castle was first built here, on a basilt outcrop, in the 5th century by the Saxon monarch and founder of the Northumbria kings, Ida. The settlement was named ‘Bebbanburgh’ after Bebba, the wife of Ida’s grandson Ethelfrith. In exile King Oswald, a convert to Christianity, spent time on the Scottish island of Iona and on regaining the Northumbria throne, he sent to the monastery there for monks to spread the gospel throughout his land.
