The village of Ballykelly sits on the A2 road between Londonderry and Limavady, in the midst of forested country with plenty of trails that are rather safer these days than they were a couple of centuries ago when they were frequented by highwaymen. Ballykelly was a 17th century plantation settlement, in its case sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers taking advantage of its easy access to the seafood riches of Lough Foyle – access made even simpler with the construction of a canal to the waters there.
