Between Harpenden and Welwyn is the village of Ayot St Lawrence with only 50 houses, an historic pub and two churches (one of which is Norman). However, the village was home to the golfer Nick Faldo and one of these houses was owned from 1906 till his death in 1950 by the famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. This Edwardian house (Shaw’s Corner) is open to the public and a National Trust property incorporating the great dramatist's revolving Writing Hut, various literary and personal effects, including his Oscar and Nobel Prize.
