Ardrishaig is a village and small port in mid-Argyll on the west-coast of Scotland, situated south of the town Lochgilphead and approximately 30 miles west of Glasgow. During the 19th century Ardrishaig was an active fishing port and noted as an area used for smuggling. The settlement grew from 1801 with the building of the Crinan Canal. Ardrishaig sits at the south-east entrance to the nine mile long Canal linking to the village of Crinan. The waterway was built by John Rennie to cut across the Kintrye Peninsula to ensure steamers and fishing fleets avoided the long trip around the Mull of Kintyre, providing safe access to the north Atlantic and the Hebrides.
