Appleby’s full name is Appleby-in-Westmorland, the old county incorporated in the town’s name in 1974 to recognize and preserve it – Appleby was the county town of Westmorland, which held its assize courts there, though Kendal housed the county council. The town sits on the A66 cross-country route, roughly halfway between Penrith and Brough, and was an important location in medieval times, an easily defended area in a loop of the River Eden, its Norman castle dominating the district.
