The South Gloucestershire village of Alveston is 13 miles (21k) to the north of Bristol and close to the town of Thornbury (3 miles - 5k), it lies at the southern end of the Vale of Berkeley. There has been human activity in and around Alveston for millenia, the Alveston Barrows on the outskirts of the village date from the Mesolithic age (about 4500 B.C); in 2001 two pot-holers exploring a local cave found an underground chamber, the floor of which was strewn with animal and human bones along with pot shards.
