The picturesque village of Allerford lies westwards along the coast road from Minehead, close to the Bristol Channel coastline. It is part of the the Exmoor National Park in Somerset. The park was one of the first British National Parks, being designated back in 1954. In all, the park spans two counties and covers 297 square miles. The village goes back a long way, being mentioned in the Domesday Book as 'Alresford – forda de Limesy Mill'. One of the features of the village is the much photographed Packhorse Bridge, an 18th century stone bridge built to allow wool laden donkeys and mules to cross the River Aller.
