Achnasheen is a tiny village in Wester-Ross, in the centre of the Northern Highlands of Scotland, situated 42 miles north-west of Inverness. Achnasheen lies at a junction between Skye and Gairloch. The village was historically an important drover stop for the cattle-trade in the Highlands on their way to the markets at Dingwall and Inverness. The ‘Old Drovers Road’ can be seen on the north-side of Loch Rosque at 100ft above the main road. Achnasheen translated from Gaelic means ‘field of storms’ this is probably an accurate description of the area during winter weather, as it sits at a height of 500ft at the foot of Ben Fionn, with little shelter in the wide valley of Strathbran.
