The combination of an elegant, spacious, ivy-clad house, surrounded by well laid-out gardens, dating back to 1800, with a lovely ambience generated by the proprietors' warm welcome and the attentive staff has created a very special country house hotel in East Anglia. For many years residents in North Walsham knew it as the doctor's house, then it was extended and transformed to accommodate guests, including Agatha Christie, who visited regularly until the mid-60s when it was a private house. The bedrooms are delightful, with big windows, individually decorated and filled with traditional and antique furniture. The comfortable drawing room is well supplied with books and magazines and residents enjoy the intimate bar. The atmosphere in the Dining Room reflects the contentment of diners appreciating a menu that includes classic English dishes and Head Chef Steven Norgate's personal suggestions, incorporating the excellent local produce available, together with fine wines, many from the New World, selected by the owners. Winner of the 1999 Johansens Most Excellent Value for Money Award. Minimum booking of 2 nights, no 1 night reservations accepted on-line. Places of interest nearby: Sandringham, Blickling Hall and Holkham Hall. Bird-watchers head for Cley Marches and the Nature Reserves; others enjoy the Norfolk Broads or explore Norwich Cathedral.
